Stone Soup Croutons, 2-15-18, Out to Seed

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions butchered picked up from poems overheard from Stone Soup's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here. To paraphrase Lorne Michaels, this poem doesn't go up because it's ready, it goes up because it's Friday morning.

Last night was an all-open mic, announced very late this week. I'm grateful for the group that comes not ever knowing what I have planned. News of next week's feature is already up. I have more news to announce later. Got to get ready for National Poetry Month and Stone Soup's forty-seventh anniversary. For now, here's the hodgepodge poem of the week.

Out to Seed

Spinning like Dylan during
His last day in his last favorite pub,
fumbling fingers on your cell
looking for an app that wins
the fight against yourself.

Hold up hands in victory
over you, the train paves
your home down in its new path,
the driver distracting you
with his molasses-thick accent.

Your worst fears, as if God
had been listening, not knowing
you were not a muse,
just toxic like a plant
grabbing bare legs in summer.

God would take you to court
for false representation
if you didn't remind him of his son
who passes away every weekend.
only you look more trussed up,

more corpse like, army ants
ready to invade and occupy
your unwashed clothes. Too busy
beating yourself up, you never
took on anything bigger.

Bil actually made himself number one, using the "1" in the list for his name.

Special thanks to Bil Lewis, Julia Vogel, David Miller, Martha Boss, Erik Nelson, Jan Rowe, Nancy Messom, Dexter Roberts, Ryan "Rat" Travis and James Van Looy.
